Our Associate Director and Solicitor, Mary Lomas, recently wrote an article for BMF (British Motorcyclists Federation), highlighting the risks involved in motorbike safety and when to get in touch with a solicitor to obtain advice if you’ve been involved in a bike collision. Read on to see the full article below….
It’s great to see you all getting out and about now the weather is picking up. Being based in Derbyshire and Cheshire we see plenty of bikers out at this time of year enjoying the fabulous roads and biker friendly venues. We are out and about again at bike shows and events. We are particularly excited by the monthly bike nights we are organising with a local motorbike clothing boutique, Geared2Go, supporting the biker community and a brilliant local business.
As you get out and about more, the risks of being involved in an accident do increase. Remember if you are unfortunate enough to be involved in a bike collision you don’t have to use the solicitors your insurers tell you to use. You may be advised that you have to use them, and your legal expense insurance may not be valid otherwise, but this isn’t strictly true, and it is worth speaking to us to see if your policy will still be valid. If you don’t have legal expense insurance there are other ways to fund your claim and you can take out an after the event policy. Legal expense funding can be complex so it is worth speaking to a solicitor about it if you are unsure.
We’re sure you are all aware that there are other hazards to be aware of. You may have an accident involving a pothole, spillage on the road, faulty road surface, or even an escaped animal. If you have an accident involving anything like this please do call us for a chat to see if there is a claim, these issues can be complex and can require case by case analysis. Quite often the injuries sustained in an accident involving one of these issues can be serious and expensive, so it is worth taking legal advice.
We know that a lot of groups organise ride outs, and the BMF receive questions about organiser liability. Mary will be preparing a special blog for the BMF website about this, so please keep an eye on the website for this. Keep on organising events and ride outs and enjoy each other’s company – the main thing to remember is to use your common sense and risk assess.
Enjoy the summer, and don’t forget to come and say hello if you see us out and about. You can also check out our social media for more details of where we will be.
