A woman has been through a year long ordeal after she was left with a gaping hole in her mouth and experiencing considerable pain after an unsuccessful procedure to fit a bridge in her teeth. Bridges are used to replace teeth. They span the missing space and are cemented to existing teeth next to the space.
She started having problems with her molars after she had a bridge fitted by a well-respected dentist. She was in considerable pain and felt embarrassed about having to keep going back to find out what the problem was. She eventually went to a different dentist for a second opinion and it was discovered that the roots had been exposed underneath the bridge, causing extreme pain. She said:
“I visited another dentist and she was shocked and appalled at my teeth. She attempted root canal surgery but it didn’t work.
Over the next 9 months she had numerous painful procedures to correct the problem including root canal, teeth extraction, implants and a sinus lift. She was forced to hide her smile for more than a year whilst this was going on as she was unable to wear her bridge which meant she had a noticeable number of teeth missing.
The woman commented: “……………… was a respected dentist in an affluent area ……. and I trusted him.
“My experience, however, was far from excellent.
“The pain was like an exposed nerve. I needed painkillers all the time, but nothing would make it go away.
“………… told me that all filed down teeth under bridges are sensitive and that it was fine, but he did not address my pain at all. He just would not admit that there was something wrong.”
The teacher was awarded £12,000 in compensation by The Dental Surgery
She is set to now have her last implants. “I don’t smile much now as I have two missing teeth. But when I do, I smile with my mouth closed.” she added.
