BBC Essex requested compensation figures from between 2010 and 2015 under the Freedom of Information Act to establish the extent to medical negligence claims in its region. The figures show that the region’s trusts paid out £507m to patients and this was increased to £532 if you included claims made by medical staff injured at work.
The figures from the NHS Litigation Authority reveal that the county Essex had the most claims made between 2010-11 and 2014-15 of around 1,270 and that Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust, paid out the most within the county.
The medical director of Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust said:
“We would want to not have to be paying this out. It’s not the money – we wouldn’t want the errors to be occurring in the first place,” she said.
