Health and safety investigations have been started after an employee was nearly killed when a car fell from the hydraulic jacks and landed on the man, trapping him under a ramp.
The accident happened in a busy and well known car repair garage when an incident occurred which caused three cars to move in a domino effect leaving a mechanic lucky to be alive.
According to emergency crews, the accident was caused when one car moved from its bay when it jumped into gear, whilst it was having its engine worked on. This car then knocked the adjacent car off its hydraulic jacks causing it to nose dive down onto another car causing this car to also come off the jacks and onto the employee working on it below.
The mechanic is thought to have only suffered minor injuries including lacerations to the back of his neck and a cut above his eye and was lucky that the ramp protected him from the weight of the vehicle.
The accident happened just after 3pm and it took a number of hours for fire crews and Police to secure the accident site and safely free the employee.
A witness said: “I was just getting my tyres done when I heard a big bang and saw a car on its roof.
“The ambulance was here in just a matter of minutes.”
An ambulance spokesperson said: “A member of staff was trapped under a lift. Fortunately, he only sustained minor injuries and was freed with the help of the fire service and was taken to the ……. Hospital.”
