In 2012 the total compensation bill for NHS medical negligence rose to £172 million, with some London trusts doubling the amount paid out to patients.
The actual amount paid out is actually even higher when legal fees and court costs are taken into account.
This figure obtained from the NHS Litigation Authority covers payouts for medical negligence including cases where patients have died due to mistakes made by hospital staff. It also includes errors which have left people disabled or doctors failed to spot serious illness.
Obstetrics claims following mistakes in maternity units accounted for £89 million, including cases where babies ended up severely disabled at birth.
There has also been a rise in the number of claims made by patients to 1,211 last year from 1,124.
Barts Health NHS Trust, South London Healthcare NHS Trust, Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust and North West London Hospitals NHS Trust had the highest compensation bills among London trusts. Barts paid the most of any trust in the country — £24.4 million.
