A 61-year old man, who was hit by a car and sustained life-changing injuries as a result, has been awarded a huge settlement figure of £2 million. The accident occurred when a car pulled out in front of him on a busy A road and he suffered a major brain injury as a result of the accident.
The man spent nine months in hospital receiving treatment to aid his recuperation and he is now back home and totally dependent on his wife to care for him.
Previous to the accident, the cyclist was a self-employed estimator/salesman for an interior-design company but he is now unable to work again and his wife had to give up her job to take care of him. As a result of this devastating and life changing incident, the couple instructed solicitors to investigate the crash following an admission of liability by the defendant’s insurers who had pleaded guilty to careless driving.
The couple instructed specialist serious injury solicitors to investigate the crash following an admission of liability by the defendant’s insurers. The driver had pleaded guilty to careless driving in 2011.
The man was awarded a £2million out-of-court settlement for suffering “life-changing” brain injuries in the road accident, which was approved by the High Court, which will support the family in the absence of any income, pay for further rehabilitation and also includes provision for the family to return to court if the man later develops epilepsy as a result of his brain injury.
One positive thing, to come out this tragic accident, is that the ex-cyclist is now an avid campaigner for making cycle helmets compulsory and attends his local Headway Group.
He said: “I believe wearing a cycle helmet saved my life. I’ve been campaigning to try and make them compulsory for all. Anything, that can be done to improve safety for cyclists, is extremely important.”
Although compensation can never repair the damage done after a catastrophic injury, it can help to pay for lifelong care including respite care and also help modify homes and vehicles to improve quality of life.
