NHS Trusts are in the news a lot lately and are under increasing scrutiny to maintain standards of care and in many cases improve standards! According to new watchdog figures, the number of NHS complaints has risen by almost 50 per cent in five years which is a considerable increase.
Major offenders include the London North West Healthcare NHS Trust which registered the highest number of investigated complaints per 100,000 clinical episodes which was shortly followed by Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust with 14.8 cases, and 14.6 at Isle of Wight trust.
According to the NHS Ombudsman, one of the main reasons for lodging a grievance us due to the face that there was a failure to offer a simple apology when things went wrong.
The Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt said: “This is exactly why we are introducing the Duty of Candour. The NHS often provides superb care, but where things do go wrong patients deserve an apology and an explanation.”
A spokesperson for Basildon Hospital said: “This report is in no way a reflection of the high standard of services we provide at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
“We proactively invite patients who are not satisfied with the outcome of their complaint to refer the matter on to the ombudsman for further investigation.”
