A national patient survey, published by the Quality Care Commission, exposes Medway’s A&E department as being rated as the second worst in the country. The A&E survey is the fifth of its kind produced by the CQC and it highlights Medway hospital’s troubled reputation.
The Medway Maritime hospital is already in the spotlight after becoming one of 10 trusts rated worse than expected when compared with others around the country. Patients were asked 41 questions and Medway was ranked ‘worse’ for 23 of them. The only positive to take from this survey is that they weren’t the worst hospital identified in the survey, that accolade goes to Tameside hospital in Greater Manchester which came out with 25 ‘worse’ ratings out of 41.
The CQC report states: “Medway NHS Foundation Trust has consistently ‘worse than expected’ scores for questions around patient reported waiting times and how staff interacted with them, among others.
“All trusts rated with high proportions of questions where their performance is ‘worse’ must review their performance as a matter of urgency to ensure that they deliver good quality A&E services across the areas included in this survey”.
Medway became one of 10 hospitals placed in special measures after the Keogh review in 2013 and has been closely monitored by the CQC ever since. More recent watchdog inspections have found that despite some improvements the patients are continuing to get substandard care.
