I am the current UCI Para-cycling C1 World Champion in the Individual Pursuit, Scratch Race, Time Trial and Road Race as well as the 2018 UCI Para-cycling World Cup Series Winner.
I first learnt to ride a bike at the age of 9. I was born with Cerebral Palsy (CP) which affects all four limbs, coordination, balance and speech.
As a result of my Cerebral Palsy, it has taken me longer to reach some of my goals. However, through perseverance and family support, I have overcome many of obstacles. I was told that I would never ride at a competitive level, due to my Cerebral Palsy, now I am a Five Times World Champion!
In 2016 I won the British National Paracycling Time Trial and Road Race Championships in the C1-3 Category, I hold 6 National Records, and have won the National Para-cycling Series three years running.
In 2018 I got an amazing opportunity to compete in my first UCI Paracycling Track World Championship, in Rio de Janerio, Brazil with British Cycling, where the Paralympics had taken place just 18 months before. My goal really was just to enjoy myself, I had no idea I would come back with a Gold Medal in the Individual Pursuit.
A couple of months later the road race season was well underway and I went to the first round of the UCI Paracycling Road World Cup Series, Ostend, Belgium, I won the round, which again was completely unexpected (given that I was self-funded). This opened up several more opportunities including racing at the UCI Paracycling Road World Championships in Maniago, Italy, again with British Cycling, and at the final round of the UCI Paracycling Road World Cup Series in Baie-Comeau, Canada.
It sounds unbelievable but I won both races at the World Championships and both races at the last round of the World Cup Series in my category. The achievement was even more unbelievable when you consider that the temperature in Italy was 37°C for the road race and to get to Baie-Comeau required around 30 hours of travel.
It is difficult to put into words how amazing 2018 was; and will be hard to beat! But with the continued support from the Derbyshire Institute of Sport, Barney Storey and Move Physio plus moving over to race for Storey Racing and gaining the support of Thorneycroft Solicitors, I am going to give it a good try!
I have had a good start to the year, despite not feeling 100% at points. I have still achieved Gold in the Individual Pursuit and Scratch Race, as well as Silver in the 500m TT at the UCI Paracycling Track World Championships, Apeldoorn, The Netherlands.
I also achieved 1st place at the Chester Road Club – UCI Paracycling Time Trial, this was a factored event against athletes who are more able bodied.
My most recent win came at the Ostend round of the World Cup 2019.
Away from cycling, I am also a CP Teens UK Ambassador, which is a charity for teenagers with Cerebral Palsy.
Over the next few months I hope to be able to race at qualifying events for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic games, this means racing both nationally and internationally.
