A wiring manufacturer has been fined after a worker was seriously injured when he was caught in machinery at their site.
A Magistrates’ Court heard how an operator was cleaning the base track of an unguarded automatic palletising line when the reel loading arm activated. It caught the operator at waist level crushing him onto the empty pallet causing serious injury to his pelvis.
The company was fined a total of £7,500 and ordered to pay costs of £2,673 for breaching Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
HSE Inspector commented:
“The prevention of part or whole body access to dangerous parts of machinery is a health and safety basic that is well known throughout all industries.”
