Resolution, the national organisation of family lawyers committed to non-confrontational divorce, separation and other family problems, is holding its second “Dispute Resolution Awareness Week”. The awareness campaign will take place week commencing 25 November and the aim of the week is to promote the benefits of alternatives to court for separating and divorcing couples.
Sadly, divorce and separation affects almost everybody. A recent opinion poll carried out on Resolution’s behalf revealed that more than four fifths of people know someone close to them who has been divorced, with 58% having a divorced family member.
It’s therefore important that the public – as well as people who come into contact with separating couples, are aware of the positive role that non-court-based options such as mediation, collaborative law, and arbitration can play in divorce and separation.
These options are particularly helpful in reducing conflict, as well as helping ensure that where children are involved, their needs come first.
Our family law solicitor Chris Bowen is trained as a Collaborative Family Lawyer. Under the collaborative law process, each person appoints his or her own collaboratively trained lawyer and the couple and their respective lawyers all meet together to work things out face to face. The couple and the lawyers sign an agreement that commits everyone to trying to resolve the issues without going to court and prevents the lawyers representing their clients in court if the collaborative process breaks down. That means all are absolutely committed to finding the best solutions by agreement, rather than through court proceedings.
Chris has substantial experience in this field and is an accredited member of the Law Society Family Law Panel. As well as being a member of Resolution, he is a member of various local Collaborative Family Practice groups, one of which, the High Peak Oldham & Tameside Collaborative Family Law group (known as “HOTpod”) will be looking to support the awareness week with an event on November 27.
