A Grandmother has won £35,000 in damages after she had to pay £24,000 to have painful dental implants following the loss of 13 teeth. The 62 year old Grandmother from Preston was left almost completely toothless after her dentist of 30 years failed to recognise or provide correct treatment for gum disease. She has recently won £35,000 damages in an out of court settlement after taking legal action against her dentist.
She had to have surgery to remove 13 teeth as they were rotting from the inside out and eventually have implants fitted, which in total cost her £24,000. The patient affected said the incident has completely ruined her life. She had black eyes, a swollen mouth and couldn’t eat for a week. She would hate for anyone to have to go through what she went through and she is now very self-conscious and it has trashed her confidence.
The 62 year old grandmother had been at the same practice for 30 years and attended dental appointments every 6 months. Her dentist always gave her the all clear even if she had told him something was wrong and so naturally she didn’t think anything was wrong. She trusted him and he never once mentioned gum disease or suggested for her to see a dental hygienist.
She eventually found out she had gum disease when away on holiday in 2013 when her crown fell out and she visited a local dentist. The local dentist showed his concerned and they returned home immediately.
Upon returning from her holiday she visited another local dentist and they confirmed she had gum disease and would lose all of the top set of her teeth. She had 13 teeth taken out including a wisdom tooth which could not be saved either and was advised to have an implant to replace where the wisdom tooth was.
To make the situation even worse for the Grandmother, she actually paid for private dental care regularly and so expected to be treated with an even higher level of service. The dentist involved, who did not admit liability, refused to comment.
