‘Silver separators’ is a term now being used to describe a phenomenon of the rising number of 50+ couples starting divorce proceedings. Interestingly, the rates of divorce overall in the UK are dropping slightly according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics.
Divorce decreased by 2.9% between 2012 and 2013. The one section of the population where divorce rates are bucking this trend and rising is the 50+ category. Nearly 60,400 people who were 50+ got divorced in England and Wales in 2013 which equates to a rise of 11 per cent in a decade.
Although a somewhat unfair name for those in their 50’s, who often look fitter and healthier than they ever did in their 30’s and 40’s, the so called silver generation do appear to be splitting up as soon as their dependents leave the nest.
Another reason for the trend that has been suggested is that people are living longer and now it’s not unusual to live into your 80’s or even 90’s with modern health care and healthy life choices. Realistically you may still have 20-30 good years left with your spouse when you are in your 50’s which, for some people, apparently is not an appealing thought.
Facing another 20 or 30 years with someone you don’t love is not an option for those who can financially support themselves with healthy pensions. Another theory behind the ‘silver splitters’ is that there are a greater number of successful women with well-paid careers who don’t need their spouse for financial independence.
