A woman has been awarded a seven figure settlement for a personal injury claim.
The woman who pursued the claim for over two years received the settlement after an unforeseeable accident left her paralysed from the waist down.
Her distress was compounded by doctors who told her that not only had she lost the use of her legs, but she would also no longer be able to have children.
The claimant was left fighting for her life in 2013 when a 70kg slab of concrete fell from a nearby shop, crushing her as she walked by. The slab hit her head and neck, crushing her spine and left her with catastrophic injuries.
“I remember just being in and out of consciousness. People were crowding around me on the side of the pavement.”
“I could hear loads of sirens and flashing lights, the paramedics told me to stay still because I kept trying to turn my head.”
The claimant recalled that she wasn’t given her diagnosis until a couple of days after her accident.
She said: “The first thing I asked was ‘can I still have children?’ For me that was the biggest thing. We were going to get married and then start a family.”
‘The doctors said it was no longer going to be possible. I remember sitting in bed for three days crying. I didn’t think my husband would want to be with me.”
Once the shop accepted liability for the accident, the claimant’s legal team began to add up the cost of equipment that she would need going forward. They also weighed up the cost of potential care that she may need in the future, her potential loss of earnings, and her projected life expectancy, before settling on a seven figure sum with the shop’s insurer.
Part of the settlement was used to build a specially adapted bungalow.
Four years on from her accident, the former nursery worker refused to give up hope and is now happily married and a proud mother to her eight-month-old son.
