The amount set aside by the NHS to compensate patients for medical blunders and clinical negligence has soared by nearly a quarter in a year.
A total of £22.7billion has been reserved to deal with thousands of claims, particularly in hospitals in Mid Staffs, East Lancs and Tameside. The level of care in certain NHS hospitals has been inadequate and for this, billions of pounds must be put to one side to deal with compensation. The number of claims rose by 11 per cent last year to 10,129, with some payouts of around £5million.
