A 75 year old dentist has been fined after it was discovered he wasn’t registered with the GDC (General Dental Council) and had been practicing illegally for many years.
The dentist, whose laboratory was based opposite the Royal Liverpool Dental Hospital, had set up his business providing dentures and denture repairs without being fully registered.
The Dentist Act of 1984 states that all practicing dentists, dental technicians, hygienists and nurses etc must be registered with the GDC in the UK to ensure only fully qualified professionals practice dentistry to prevent poor practice.
A Liverpool Magistrates Court found the man guilty of practising dentistry unlawfully and that all the work carried out by this Liverpool dentist to date was in fact illegal. The dentist was fined £2,500, ordered to pay £1,290.70 in costs as well as a £200 victim surcharge.
