A woman who was left in ‘excruciating’ pain after poor dental care has been successful in her claim for compensation. The young woman claimed that a number of dentists had failed to spot pieces of dental file had been left lodged in her gum, which were only discovered by X-rays.
The woman in question had been seeing the same dentist for regular check-ups since she was a little girl. When her dentist moved to a different surgery she stayed at the practice under a different dentist. This dentist gave the patient several fillings and not long after this the woman became unwell when three abscesses were discovered after a trip to A&E.
The patient then sought out her old dentist for advice and treatment at his new surgery. After a full dental examination, her original dentist told her she would require root canal treatments at a cost of more than £1,800. The young woman was distraught at this news:
“I was devastated. I was only 24 so the news that my teeth were in such a poor state was really shocking.
“I could not start a new dental insurance plan until all this remedial work was completed. I was facing the prospect of footing this huge bill.”
It was later found that both dentists had been negligent in terms of dental work previous to her fillings and the root canal which followed. Both dentists also failed to diagnose tooth decay.
“The compensation will cover my immediate treatment and corrective treatment like crowns. I have gone through the pain of having two pieces of the dental file shards removed from my root canal but face another three or four hours to have the final one removed. I just seem to live at the dentist nowadays. It’s really been a traumatic experience”.
“Emotionally, it’s been horrendous. I used to be really confident but am now really self-conscious when I smile. The pain was excruciating. I have never felt anything like it. I am just afraid to smile.”
