A dentist, who misdiagnosed dental problems, kept illegible records and prescribed antibiotics without examining his patients, has been struck off.
The GDC, the General Dental Council has investigated the dentist following complaints over his standards of dental care. A professional conduct committee heard how the dental practitioner made numerous errors and made dishonest claims for payments.
The committee heard evidence that the dentist decided to ignore advice and extract the teeth of a patient who was on medication when the correct course of action would be to refer them to hospital. In two separate incidents, it was found that he misdiagnosed gingival calculus and also failed to identify and treat a number of carious lesions in two patients.
The inquiry revealed his failure to undertake comprehensive examinations and made “inadequate and barely legible notes”. The committee also discovered he had made 31 inappropriate and dishonest claims for payment.
A summary of the hearing said: “Your failings were wide ranging and repeated and involved serious clinical errors as well as blatant acts of dishonesty.
“The committee determined that your clinical failings demonstrated a disregard for your patients’ best interests.
“You failed to treat your patients appropriately and, in addition, you dishonestly claimed unwarranted payments for your work.
“The committee took the view that your dishonest actions, which involved you knowingly and dishonestly taking advantage of a trust based contractual system, compounded matters and rendered your overall conduct irredeemable”.
As a result of the committee’s findings the decision was made to erase the dentists name from the dentists’ register.
