Often when you see a story like this you would assume it involves a healthcare provider misdiagnosing cancer for something minor but in this instance a patient was told they had terminal cancer when in fact they had an abscess which could have been treated.
A Hospital Trust has had to apologise to a family after its staff misdiagnosed an abscess on her pelvis for terminal bowel cancer. The 70 year old woman had three children who are understandably very angry about the post-mortem results and are now seeking legal advice.
What is particularly sad about this case is that the mother of three could have been given treatment for the pelvic condition but instead she was advised, along with her family, to get her affairs in order as it was terminal and this news in itself may have contributed toward her untimely death.
Her son said: “We all know that we are never going to get our mother back but we intend to continue fighting so those who believe are to blame for her death are held properly accountable.
“I want to be able to go to her grave and tell her that I am fighting for the justice she deserves.”
The Hospital chief executive, said: “The intention of this discussion is to make sure we understand what went wrong with the care of ……
“There were a number of significant failings in the care we provided that we recognise.”
The Health Service Ombudsman has reviewed the case and found the Healthcare NHS Trust was guilty of numerous failings.
